Several years ago I guest posted this tutorial over at the Britex Fabric blog with a pattern and instructions for a child’s cadet style cap! Check out the amazing fabrics they carry! The hat below is made from a beautiful herringbone olive and espresso wool from Britex (these exact fabrics are no longer available).
The instructions and pattern link are available here at Britex. This free pattern comes in child size 5 only. The finished base of the free hat measures 20 7/8″ and fits a head circumference (measured from the middle of the forehead to the widest part of the back of the skull) of 20 1/4″, the average size of a 5 year old.

What is your policy about selling products made from your patterns? I’m just starting my business and want to make sure that I start on the right foot. I will be checking out your business tutorials as well.
Thanks, Jerry
If you are selling a limited quantity (5 or fewer), go on right ahead. If you are interested in selling at a higher rate than that, just send us a message and we’ll discuss the details. Thanks!
Thanks for the and tutorial. I just made this for my son and he loves it.
I’m so happy to hear it turned out! You’re the first person I’ve heard from that’s actually made it :). I’d love to see a photo if it’s not too much trouble. It could be e-mailed to marij4 (at) gmail (dot) com.
Hi there I downloaded the pattern but the link to the instructions does not seem to work. Are there other instructions available?
Thanks for looking me up and letting me know, it looks like Britex updated the post earlier this month! I’ve re-posted the instructions to Craft Buds and you can find them here: https://craftbuds.mystagingwebsite.com/free-cadet-cap-size-5/
Mary – Have you released the paid version with additional sizes? This cap is wonderful, but I do not trust myself to figure out how to enlarge it.
i downloaded to pattern, where do i got for the tutorial?
Thanks Carol, I’ve updated the post with correct links and you can find the instructions here https://craftbuds.mystagingwebsite.com/free-cadet-cap-size-5/. Happy sewing!
Dear Lindsey, I’m a 70 yr old retired Air Force grandma that makes hats and thinking of chemo patients.
How can I get the “cadet cap” pattern for adults?
Hi Ginny, the pattern is at a standstill right now! I still need to draft the lining pieces for all sizes so a completed pattern (other than the free size 5 one) isn’t available yet. I’ll notify you when it is, but I’m not sure yet when that’ll be!
Hi, do you have the pattern adjusted to a bigger size?
I love the cap style
